Hygge—A cozy sanity saver through the winter months.

Hygge—A cozy sanity saver through the winter months.

We are going through a cold, wet spell around here, and it makes me want to stay home with a cup of tea, and a cozy blanket Hygge style. Have you heard of Hygge? My mother’s side of the family is Danish, and my Danish grandmother always tried to make spaces in her home “cozy.” Hygge is not difficult, and with a few simple steps you will be well on your cozy, Hygge, and happy way.

Create your cozy nook
space with warm blankets and a comfy pillow.

What is Hygge?

Hygge, pronounced ‘hoo-ga’ or ‘hue-gah’; is the idea of embracing cozy and togetherness. It doesn’t have to be Winter to enjoy Hygge, but during the long, cold months, I definitely like to feel more cozy at home.

Most importantly, here are a few simple tips to master the art of Hygge in your home or space. Choose a couple, or do them all, I’m sure you will feel something different when you practice Hygge with purpose.

6 simple steps:

1. First, a good place to start is by creating or finding a comfortable space, maybe by the fireplace, a nook by the window, or a comfy chair or sofa. Next, gather warm, soft blankets or pillows for comfort.

Candles, Candles, Candles. Light all the candles!

2. If it’s chilly outside and you have a fireplace, light it up. If not, no problem, use candles. Place candles around the room to make it glow. Unscented candles work best so the smell isn’t too overpowering. You can also add twinkly lights to give a nice glow in the room too.

3. Make a warm cup of whatever you love coffee, hot cocoa, tea, or cider and then keep refilling when you get low.

Cup of something warm along with candlelight makes this space extra cozy.

4. Wear comfortable clothing. Enjoy the quiet and peace, and think about things you are grateful for.

5. Think creatively for a minute about a hobby, something you have always wanted to do, but haven’t had the time for.  Some examples can be, knitting, sewing, reading, writing, playing an instrument.

6. Read a book, or invite friends over to enjoy a hot drink with you. Hygge means togetherness and sharing a cozy space with others too.

What do you like to do to feel cozier and feel togetherness in your home?
